About the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro

The museum displays the Treasure of San Gennaro, the collection of devotional gifts built up around Naples' patron saint. Its rooms hold jewelled pieces, silver reliquaries and busts, and the sacristies of the Chapel of the Treasure, with paintings by Luca Giordano and Massimo Stanzione. The collection is cared for by the Deputation of the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, which commissioned several of its best-known pieces.

Why Visit the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro?

The Jewelled Mitre

Made in the early 18th century by goldsmith Matteo Treglia for the saint's bust in the May procession. The gilded silver mitre carries 3,326 diamonds, 198 emeralds and 168 rubies, and weighs about 18 kg.

The Necklace of San Gennaro

It began in 1679 as thirteen gold links by Michele Dato. Over the next 250 years rulers kept adding jewels, among them Charles of Bourbon, Maria Carolina of Austria, Victor Emmanuel II and Joseph Bonaparte.

The Silver Busts

The Chapel holds 54 silver busts: the 53 co-patron saints of Naples and the Virgin Mary. The reliquary bust of San Gennaro was commissioned by Charles II of Anjou in 1304.
