About Ercolano (Herculaneum)

Herculaneum lies at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, right below the modern town of Ercolano. The way it was buried in 79 AD preserved wood, food and other organic finds that rarely survive anywhere else in the Roman world.

It is much smaller than Pompeii, and that works in its favor: you can see a lot in a couple of hours, and the houses feel close and detailed rather than spread out.

Walk through a real slice of a Roman town, with houses, shops and public buildings lined up along streets you can still follow today.

The House of the Deer

One of the grandest homes in Herculaneum, named after the deer sculptures found in its garden. Look out for the frescoes and decorated rooms inside.

The Antiquarium and Boat Pavilion

The Antiquarium shows sculptures and frescoes from the town, including the statue of Marcus Nonius Balbus and a bronze Lernaean Hydra.

Next door, the Boat Pavilion holds the charred remains of a boat found near the ancient beach in the 1980s.

The Ancient Shoreline

Herculaneum once stood on the sea. In the vaults along its old beach, archaeologists found the skeletons of residents who fled there during the eruption. It is a sobering sight.

The streets keep their original paving and raised sidewalks, so you move through the town exactly the way its residents did.

Things to Know Before Visiting Ercolano

Book Ahead: Buying tickets online in advance is the simplest way to avoid queuing at the entrance, especially in spring and summer.

Sun and Heat: Much of the site is in full sun. In summer, bring water and a hat and plan your visit for the morning.
